The celebrated painter Fra' Angelico was a superstar at the beginning of the Renaissance. It was here in the Church of San Marco (and in the adjoining 15th-century Dominican convent) that he served God, together with the restless preacher Girolamo Savonarola. Admire Angelico's most famous artwork and frescoes as you explore this 15th-century religious complex.
Fra' Angelico completed most of his works during the period when he was known as 'The Blessed'. He was declared a saint in 1984 by Pope John Paul II. Inside the St. Mark's Museum you'll see a wide range of his paintings, including the famous Deposition, with its realistic depiction of nature.
There are also some magnificent and significant frescoes, including The Table of St. Dominic by Giovanni Antonio Sogliani and the Crucifixion with Saints by Fra' Angelico, contained in the former chapter house. The Annunciation fresco is Fra' Angelico's most famous work, and it has every reason to be!
Inside the cells there are further reliefs and devotional frescoes, in stark contrast to the simple style of Savonarola's rooms. The latter was a Dominican friar and preacher, who lived here from 1489, until he went too far with the Church and was then hanged in the square.
